Taking Responsibility – Phasing Out PFAS and PVC

Introduction

For us, sustainability means more than conserving resources — it also includes the conscious selection of materials throughout the entire value chain. That is why we have made a clear commitment to phase out PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) and PVC (polyvinyl chloride) — especially in our packaging materials, where we completely avoid the use of these substances.

Why PFAS and PVC Are Problematic

  • PFAS are persistent chemicals, often referred to as "forever chemicals," that degrade extremely slowly in the environment. They have been detected worldwide in soil, water, and even in the human body. Many of these substances are considered harmful to health and the environment.
  • PVC is a plastic associated with significant environmental and health risks during its production and disposal — particularly due to plasticizers and chlorine-based compounds. When incinerated, PVC can release highly toxic dioxins.
    • A Clear Commitment in Packaging – A Conscious Approach in Products

We completely avoid the use of PFAS and PVC in all packaging materials. Instead, we use more environmentally friendly and recyclable alternatives that meet both our functional and sustainability standards.

In certain products — such as seals and septa — we currently still use PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene), a fluoropolymer from the PFAS group. Due to its unique properties and high chemical resistance, it cannot yet be easily replaced in specific applications. However, we recognize the need for action here as well. That’s why we have actively engaged with our partners and suppliers, encouraging the development of PFAS-free product solutions that meet the stringent demands of laboratory and technical applications.

      Sustainability means taking responsibility

By clearly eliminating PFAS and PVC from our packaging and critically managing their use in key functional components, we are shaping our products and processes for a more sustainable future — for people, the environment, and generations to come.
