In chromatographic systems, dissolved gasses such as oxygen and nitrogen in mobile phases and fluidic system can form bubbles which affect the accuracy, precision and performance of your chromatographic equipment. It can cause baseline noise, flow instability, retention time shifts, and detector signal disturbances. On-line solvent degassers remove dissolved gases continuously before the solvent enters the chromatographic system.
On-line solvent degassing is a very efficient way of removing dissolved gasses from the liquid and prevent bubble formation. It use a very effecient and secure on-line degassing technique with a semi-permeable membrane. The fluid is running on the inside of the degassing membrane, and on the outside vacuum is applied. The dissolved gases will then be transported through the membarne, while the fluid stays on the inside. This will reduce the dissolved gases to such an extent that formation of bubbles are prevented.
Optimum vacuum degassing performance is achieved with a membrane having high gas-permeability. Most commonly, membranes are made of PTFE AF (Systec AF) or silicone. PTFE AF (Systec AF) is an amorphous perfluorinated polymer membrane characterized by extremely high gas permeability combined with outstanding chemical resistance. Compared to conventional PTFE membranes, PTFE AF (Systec AF) exhibits significantly higher gas diffusion rates, allowing efficient degassing even at low internal volumes and higher flow rates. Silicone membranes offer high gas permeability particularly suited for aqueous and diagnostic applications and they provide robust performance at elevated flow rates and are commonly used in life science and clinical instrumentation.
